A maie is a rustic piece of furniture used for storing flour and, as a kneader , for making bread.

Bread dough

Appearing in the  15th century , iwas originally made up of a rectangular box supported by four legs or resting on a structure with drawers or leaves . It is still used in certain houses, in Haute Marne and Touraine in particular, as storage furniture in kitchens. Since the arrival of mechanical mixers, artisan bakers have reused their old dough as displays for baguettes and other breads

The upper body was provided with a movable hinged top, intended to serve as a work surface.
